When searching for a wedding photographer, most brides have an idea in their head of what they are looking for. They’ve seen wedding photos that make them say “I want THAT!” And they’ve seen some that make them say “Please don’t let me end up with their photographer!” Everyone has their own style, ideas and personality, and they want their wedding photos to reflect that. If you love very traditional wedding photos where every shot is everyone is standing on the alter holding the bouquet perfectly at the hips and smiling into the camera, then it may not be smart to hire a photographer who ONLY shoots modern, cutting edge photos. And if you like the opposite, you may not want to hire someone who only has photos on their website of the traditional alter photos. So it is very important to communicate with your photographer to know exactly what they like to shoot and how flexible they are in their style. Some stick ONLY to what they like and others will shoot a good mixture of they like as well as what you like. I fall into this last category.
When it comes to what my eye is naturally drawn to, it is not the “traditional on the alter” type of photos. I naturally take photos that are creative and candid. In an engagement session, I like to shoot while the couple is talking, laughing and being themselves. Yes, we do posed or arranged shots, don’t get me wrong. But the ones that turn our the best are usually always the candids. And even the “posed” photos are natural and playful and rarely are “Now look at the camera and smile” type of photos. I feel the photos in my galleries reflect this about my shooting style. I love the raw, natural beauty of photographs that are taken of people just being themselves. However, am I saying that if a bride really wanted to use me but really wanted the more traditional style formal photos, that I would refuse to shoot that way? Absolutely not. I want to provide photos that reflect YOU. So we will work together to decide what style of photos you are expecting. I will always shoot the way that comes natural to me..creative and candid. But I will make a point to also shoot the traditional style photos that a bride wants as well. Honestly, I know that if you are considering me as your wedding photographer, then you probably like my style. That’s why you’re considering me. But I feel I need to discuss this with my brides upfront to make sure we are all on the same page. I would hate for a client to walk away and be disappointed with their photos, even if they were all great shots.
